NeuroMetrix Inc, Waltham, Mass, reports that it will unveil Quell, a wearable pain relief device, at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, January 2105.

The company’s Quell technology is engineered to use NeuroMetrix’s proprietary noninvasive neurostimulation technology to provide relief from chronic pain, particularly for neuropathic pain resulting from diabetes and lower back issues. The wearable device is lightweight and can be worn throughout the day while active, and at night while sleeping. It has also been cleared by the FDA for treatment of chronic pain without a prescription.

A company news release notes that users of the device also have the option of using their smartphone to automatically track and personalize their pain therapy. The release adds that the company anticipates Quell to be available for purchase by consumers in the second quarter of 2015.

Shai N. Gozani, MD, PhD, president and CEO, NeuroMetrix, articulates the company’s excitement in entering the over-the-counter pain relief market, adding, “We believe that as advanced wearable therapeutic technology, Quell represents a new pain relief category that will be attractive to consumers looking for nonpharmacological pain control options.”
