Plans were recently unveiled for the building of the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance, which is the result of a strategic partnership between the University of Maryland, College Park and the University of Maryland, Baltimore.

The new Center, which will be a signature component of the Cole Field House Project in College Park, will serve as a treatment facility for sports-related injuries as well as a research center for investigation into the treatment of sports-related conditions including neuroscience and traumatic brain injury.

At the facility’s core will be an orthopaedic outpatient center. The facility will also feature the Terrapin Performance Center, which will encompass a full-size indoor football field; two outdoor fields; and strength, conditioning, and hydrotherapy centers. In addition, Cole Field House will also feature the Academy for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, states a media release from University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore.

An initial $3 million will be invested in collaborative research from research scientists, engineers, investigators, and clinicians from both universities.

“Bringing together clinicians and scientists from the state’s two biggest public research universities under one roof creates connections that will contribute to breakthroughs in human health,” says University of Maryland, College Park President Wallace D. Loh, in the release.

“We envision an ambitious research enterprise at the Center for Sports Medicine, Health and Human Performance,” states Dr Jay Perman, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore, per the release. “We believe our initial $3 million investment will lead to million-dollar, multidisciplinary grants in critical areas of neuroscience and traumatic brain injury.”
