During Posture Awareness Month in May, the ACE Your Posture awareness campaign encourages people to take charge of their spinal health and prevent back pain through better posture and improved balance.

Conceived by Dr Steven Weininger, founder of BodyZone.com and author of the book, Stand Taller, Live Longer: An Anti-Aging Strategy, the public health campaign features doctors, trainers, and physical therapists, who together encourage people to take action to prevent low back pain.

The American College of Physicians (ACP), as part of a revision of its 2007 guidelines for treating low back pain, are increasing their focus on posture, according to a media release from BodyZone.com. Per the revised guidelines, drugs such as Tylenol, Advil, NSAIDS, and opioids are discouraged, with more preferred treatments including spinal manipulation, massage and heat, yoga, and specialized exercises to retrain motor control, such as yoga, tai chi, and other postural exercises.

Resources on the ACE Your Posture website include how to perform a self-assessment, StrongPosture exercises that conform to ACP’s low back pain treatment recommendations, and tips for creating back-friendly home and work spaces.
