A new public television special airing nationally in August on the Public Television Network will discuss pain and pain management. The special, titled “Learning About Pain Management,” is part of the Healthy Body, Healthy Mind (HBHM) series, which is being supported in part by Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals. A Business Wire news release reports that the 30-minute program will take an in-depth look at the physical experience known as pain and aims to facilitate the national pain management dialogue.

The television special will examine pain and how the body senses it and is affected by it, as well as the many pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies aimed at managing it. The program will feature leading experts in the pain management field from across the United States who will address topics ranging from the psychology of pain to rehabilitation to provide viewers with information about chronic and acute pain. The program will also highlight the real-life experiences from patients and families to show the impact of pain on people’s lives.

Joseph Pergolizzi, MD, a Fla-based healthcare professional, says, “A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to pain management is critical, and this new ITV special, which touches upon biofeedback, physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy, medication and counseling, highlights the importance of this strategy.”

Mario Saltarelli, MD, senior vice president and chief science officer at Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, says, “Mallinckrodt is committed to providing comprehensive, effective treatments for patients who suffer from pain, and is equally committed to combating the misuse and abuse, by some, of pain medicines. This ITV special underscores our commitment to education, collaboration and safety in this complex arena.”
