Via an agreement with Reflexion Health, the nonprofit organization Los Angeles Jewish Home (LAJH) offers the “Stand Tall” Fall Prevention Program, incorporating the guidance of a physical therapist, to seniors living at the facility.

Using Reflexion Health’s Virtual Exercise Rehabilitation Assistant (VERA), the seniors will be able to participate in exercise and rehabilitation programs tailored to their specific needs, with their progress remotely monitored by their clinician.

“We are in a new era of patient-centered, data-driven, value-based care, and virtual rehabilitation for fall prevention is a terrific example,” says Joseph Smith, MD, PhD, chief executive officer, Reflexion Health, in a media release. “It is difficult to overstate the catastrophic impact of falling on frail seniors, and we are delighted to team up with LA Jewish Home to help their patients avoid this pothole in their road to recovery and successful aging.”

The “Stand Tall” program is the digital translation of the Otago Exercise Program, and delivers the optimal dose of exercise for 30 minutes, 2 to 3 days per week. Observing clinicians need no special training to use VERA, the release notes. One staff member could monitor multiple participants, and VERA is designed to provide feedback regarding their form.

Studies performed with the CDC and LAJH suggest that the “Stand Tall” program demonstrated significant improvements in patient strength and mobility, thereby helping to reduce the risk of falling and the costs associated with personal injury, and to lessen the dependence on assistive devices.

“The ‘Stand Tall’ program helps our residents improve their strength and mobility and, like a video game, is easy to navigate and enjoy,” states Molly Forrest, chief executive officer and president, LAJH, per the release. “We’re proud to be joining Reflexion Health and bring this digital solution to seniors to help them avoid falls and improve future outcomes.”
