MedRhythms is designed to use sensors, software, and music to provide evidence-based neurological interventions to help stroke patients improve their ability to walk.
The Portland, Maine-based company was founded by Brian Harris, a board-certified music therapist, who began what is reportedly the first Neurologic Music Therapy program at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
Via the program, Harris used music to help patients improve their ability to walk–and it was working, according to MedCity News.
Doctors and patients wished to receive that type of care outside of the hospital, and MedRhythms was borne, the news story continues.
“This was a much bigger need than just Spaulding or Boston or New England,” Harris says.
The MedRhythms platform includes a web application, mobile application, and sensors, which can connect to a patient’s shoes and collect clinical-grade data about the cadence of their walking.
To help improve their gait, the patient listens to music through headphones while walking. The company’s algorithm can also make changes to the music and tempo so the patient can improve their speed, MedRhythms continues.
“The goal of this is that it can be used in the home without the need of a clinician there,” Harris adds.
Harris is working to secure FDA approval for the MedRhythms product for stroke patients. The startup’s future goals involve looking at other disease states such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
