[This facility profile by Winnie Lim-Ventulan, PT, Regional Director of Therapy, Clear Choice Health Care, provides thought and opinion about recent equipment evolution and purchase for a private healthcare facility.]

When deciding on equipment, this organization looks into each market and makes a determination—based on the passion expressed by therapists who work at the facility and the need of the market—what programs and equipment will have the greatest impact among its clientele. Subsequently, a course is steadily pursued to develop these programs and garner the equipment to fill these needs.

Provide the best equipment

Much of the equipment at this facility is award-winning and evidenced-based toward quality outcomes and recognized by the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) as state-of-the-art for the active and aging population. Getting the best, most technologically advanced equipment in any facility is key to serving its clientele. This has been a guiding principle for Dolphin Pointe Landing, one of Clear Choice Health Care’s newer projects in Jacksonville, Fla.

Dolphin Pointe Landing- A Unique Project requiring Unique Equipment

Dolphin Pointe Landing is a collaboration between Jacksonville University and Clear Choice Health Care and its partners to provide state-of-the-art senior housing and rehab for area seniors and also provide training and volunteer opportunities for JU students. In so doing, painstaking efforts were made to select the best rehab equipment for its residents; current and future. Following is a sample of what Dolphin Pointe and many of the organization’s other facilities plan to offer.

HydroWorx

Aquatic therapy, in general, gets otherwise non-mobile people up and moving. When patients can offload and exercise in the pool, it changes their confidence and drive to get back to doing what they love to do.  Aquatic therapy helps the lymphatic system, reduces inflammation, increases range of motion, and provides a weightless environment with constant resistance. Strength increases when working against the added resistance of the water or therapy jets in this unit. The integrated water treadmill has a low-impact design and speeds that increase from 0 to 7.5 MPH in .2 MPH increments. Underwater cameras allow both therapists and patients to view gait patterns in real time and make necessary adjustments.

Aquatic therapy has drawn many patients to our facilities who we believe otherwise would not have come. This capital investment is believed to have enriched the lives of many.

FreeStep

This ceiling-mounted track system is new technology used in therapy. Patients don a harness and begin walking with no fear of falling.

Without fear of falls, patients can concentrate more fully on the task at hand and experience a level of independence they likely never have felt. Using a specialized track and harness system, therapists can treat patients who need decreased stress from weight bearing. And patients can perform multi directional movement and be challenged during walking and balance exercises.

Alter G

The anti-gravity treadmill uses air differential pressure to help with rehab activities that improve walking.

The anti-gravity treadmill uses air differential pressure to help with rehab activities that improve walking.

This treadmill has been found to have the ability to profoundly benefit the course of treatment for conditions that offset walking (e.g., pain, obesity, neurological, ambulation with prosthesis, orthopedic injury, total joint rehab, and weight bearing restrictions).

This is an anti-gravity treadmill developed by NASA and patented by AlterG. It operates with differential air pressure. Therapists calibrate the precise amount of weight to decrease during ambulation.

This treadmill has all the bells and whistles needed to identify asymmetry and gait deficiencies, and precisely dial-in the body weight support needed to enable pain-free, normalized gait.

Physical therapist monitors the live recording of a patient using the anti-gravity treadmill.

Our therapists use the live recordings of patients’ gaits and video analytics offered through AlterG to improve outcomes. These analytics are provided to patients’ physicians. For seniors, the applications for AlterG are numerous, allowing them to regain or maintain strength and endurance in a fall-safe environment.

By integrating top quality modalities for wellness and rehabilitation within a facility, an organization provides an effective way to help its residents become more active and safely perform everyday tasks required for an independent lifestyle.  Investing in a community’s needs, developing programs around these tools and utilizing therapists’ passions will help a team provide the best possible outcomes for each patient.
